Copy Editing & Line Editing

Copy Editing & Line Editing are terms that are often used interchangeably. However, they are distinct processes. Copy Editing refers to improving mechanics such as grammar, punctuation, spelling, word usage, and repetition. Unlike the technical perspective of Copy Editing, Line Editing examines style and how the author uses language. It checks for ambiguities, inaccuracies, and transitions and can involve rewriting. These processes are critical to readying a document for submission or publication. Both terms are distinct from proofreading.
